The following are stories from the Spring 1995 Burr's special section on May 4.

Lessons of May 4

Twenty-five years have passed since the sound of gunfire filled the air near Taylor Hall. Twenty-five years since a stunned nation discovered the senseless deaths of four students at a small Midwestern university named Kent State.

A new generation of students now walks those same hills that witnessed that event, A generation that sees those events as a moment in time, frozen as words and still images - distant.

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Kent State shootings, The Burr hopes to bring a sense of perspective to the events of that day. To that end, The Burr presents, "Lessons of May 4," a first-hand look at those events by the people who were there.

"May 4 Reflections" takes a look at how that day shaped many lives. Some like Alan Canfora and John Filo were direct witnesses to the event.

"Parallels to the Past" is an account of how one parent who experienced May 4 responded to his daughter's fear after the Kent State shootings in the '90s.

"Eyewitness to Tragedy" explores how Kent State Professor Jerry Lewis has made sense of his experiences through educating others. Finally, "Behind Closed Doors" takes a look at what went on that fateful day as the wounded and dying were brought to Robinson Memorial Hospital.
