According to a Falun Gong Human Rights Special Report in July 2000, about 50,000 people have been arbitrarily detained, at least 242 of whom have been sent to prison for up to 18 years. While in police custody, torture and humiliation is common. As of Aug. 14, 2001, at least 263 Falun Gong practitioners had died at the hands of the Chinese government.
