
Femicide—The killing of women, in contrast to the literal meaning of “homicide,” or the killing of men. The term is used rarely in the United States. The closest equivalent is “female homicide.”

Female victims are more likely than male victims to be killed by an intimate partner or family member. Less than 20 percent of female victims were murdered by their spouses, and more than 10 percent were murdered by former significant others.
