Okay, you probably think I’m the twisted editor who likes to glorify
death
because of our
cover story, Mike Klesta’s “Final Exams”. That’s not my intention at
all. I was very reluctant to select it as the cover story because of the subject
matter. But then I thought, the cover story should appeal to most people. And nothing unites us
quite like death—we all experience it at some point. And rarely do we think about those who
are surrounded on a constant basis by it, the ones who go where no one else would
dare. To tell you the truth, I think most of the other stories within this issue go into
uncharted territory. I wanted that. I wanted something fresh and new. I wanted a diverse issue of The
Burr that encompassed the high and low points of life through a variety of
opinions, ideas and especially people. From Rachel Myers’ story on college virgins in “The
V Word” to Jessica Ball’s trek through the after hours of Kent and the surrounding
areas in “Here’s To The Night” to Karin Olander’s story about a student who overcame
self-mutilation in “Leaving Scars”—this issue is for you—subject matter that pushes the
limits and makes you think. I want this issue to be diverse, complex, edgy, and
different. I want it to make you stop and look beneath what is on the surface. Enjoy.
