Ain't nothin' but a G-thing
Story by Danielle Toth

Dressed in a charcoal gray suit and crisp white dress shirt, Gary Broadbent, the outgoing executive director of Undergraduate Student Senate, is the epitome of a stereotypical politician. As the senior communication studies major strides across campus, he greets almost every student he sees. Broadbent’s days are packed with classes, meetings, interviews and public appearances.

While Broadbent often downplays his schedule, it’s busier than most people realize. The Burr had a writer and photographers follow him around for 24 hours to find out just how busy he is.

11:30 p.m. Thursday — The Cat’s Meow

After a busy Thursday, Broadbent is finally eating dinner, a Quizno’s sub at his house on East Summit Street, playfully named “The Cat’s Meow.”

“Other universities have a tradition of naming prestigious, old homes. We thought we’d bring that tradition to Kent State,” Broadbent says.

Broadbent relaxes with roommates Lauren Gibbons and Steve Walker in “The Treehouse,” his name for the third-floor attic, by watching women’s tennis on ESPN-2.

“Gary and I have a symbiotic relationship,” Gibbons says. “We’ve been friends for a long time.”

Broadbent jokes around with his roommates, discussing the weekend’s plans, but soon the day catches up with him.

After about an hour and a half, Broadbent brushes his teeth, and he’s tucked in bed by 1:30 a.m.
